Who Needs Music Teachers?

The makers of a new "Web 2.0" application called In the Chair tell parents the software will nurture their children's inner maestro. But will it really replace music teachers? I doubt it.

A virtual teacher sounds like an interesting concept, but I'm putting my money on the likes of my favorite music instructors over the years (Rick Bashore, Reg Richwine, David T. Chastain, etc.). Educational software might help li'l shavers hone their chops, but how different is it, really, from the prerecorded grooves we played to in high school jazz lab? Dunno.

P.S. Wonder if In the Chair works for accordion?

Hi,

I think you're right in saying that a virtual teacher will never be as good...

In the Chair does not aim to replace the music teacher, actually we find it vital that students learn an instrument with professional instruction.

Music practice is the main reason children do not like learning music, the main reason they give up learning an instrument. They would much rather play computer games or the x-box than sit in their room playing room a piece of sheet music.

For beginners, it's difficult to evaluate your playing or understand if you are improving - In the Chair changes this by making practice fun, interesting and engaging. Being able to see the band or orchestra and hear the other musicians around you make music practice an experiece. The immediate feedback allows students to work on their mistakes and improve faster. It starts becoming game-like as children want to beat their score, get the notes right - which makes them continue to practice.

Being able to see improvement is also very encouraging for music students of all ages.

In the Chair helps children to play in-tune and in-time. A teacher is still an important part of the puzzle because they teach theory, music interpretation, posture, expression, etc.
